Gregory Reyes Trial

I am 45 years old, have been married for 22 years, have two children, and am currently the President of a division of EMC Corporation. EMC and my previous employers (Digital, Compaq, HP) are all in the Information Technology business. At Digital, I started right out of college in 1984 as a mechanical engineer. I worked in a variety of roles in Engineering, and Marketing until Digital was acquired by Compaq Computer. At Compaq, I ultimately became the General Manager of the $3B Storage Business.

I met Greg Reyes over 10 years ago while at Digital Equipment Corporation. We were a potential customer at the time when Brocade was just starting out and still a private company. My responsibilities at the time required a good deal of interaction with potential suppliers, including Brocade. Consequently, I got to know Greg and his team, very well from a business perspective.

In working with Greg, I found a person who was committed, passionate, professional, smart, and who worked with the highest degree of integrity. I have worked literally with thousands of companies and individuals and I can say without hesitation that, of all of the people I know, Greg operates with the highest degree of integrity.

Over the years, Greg and I became close friends. We became, in many ways, mentors for each other. Being the same age with similar roles in the same industry, Greg and I have interacted a great deal over the years. We both have children that have special needs and we both were leading large and complex organizations. We also share similar interests.

In getting to know Greg, I saw a person that was truly passionate towards his family, his work, and his friends. Greg personally was (and still is) an inspiration to me.

Let me relate a personal story so you can understand the depth of Greg's caring for people. The date was September 11,2001. It was about 8:00 am in the morning in LA and I was in a staff meeting with my team. In one hour, I was scheduled to deliver the Keynote address at our user conference with more than 6000 people attending. I was the most senior corporate person at the event. My boss, Michael Cappellas (Compaq CEO), had left the previous evening. The 911 disaster occurred just a few minutes before I was set to speak. Consequently, most in the audience did not even know what had happened.

For the next several days I and my team had to deal with a unique problem of having to try to get 6000 people (including 600 foreign nationals) home. My boss and I had agreed that he would help get me travel home once we had helped everyone else. In the end, my boss did not come through and a core team of about 5 of us, who had worked to get everyone else home, was still stranded. We had been gone for the whole week and now it would be days before we could get home ourselves. I called Greg and mentioned our situation. Without hesitation; he said he would take care of it. He went out, chartered a plane, and got all of us to our homes across the US.

I will never forget the ease with which Greg stepped in to help. It still serves as an inspiration to me today when I think about the type of person that I want to be.

I believe you judge the true character of a person in the bad times not the good times. Shortly after the acquisition of Compaq by HP, I was told that would not be running the combined division. Personally this was crushing news for me as I felt I truly deserved the role. As the word got out, it was interesting to see how many folks were no longer interested in interacting with me - many who would have characterized me as a friend just months earlier.

Greg not only remained my friend, he helped me find a job at EMC and supported me as I was dealing with the first major failure in my career.
I only hope that I could be one tenth the friend to Greg that he has already been to me. I will tell you that writing this letter in no way feels like enough. He is a good person inside and out - through and through. I would hope that it might be evident but I realize that it takes a great deal of time to learn the true character of a person. That is why I am writing this letter. My hope is that you will be able to get more insight into Greg from these words.

If there is anything else I could do to help or give you insight into Greg, I would be happy to do it I would be happy to fly out and speak to the court or give you additional details.

Greg has just been devastated these past years dealing with all of the accusations, the trial, and now the verdict. He has been totally destroyed as being considered honest and good means everything to a person of his integrity and character. His chance at a normal career is over.

My simple point is that Greg has already faced a monumental punishment from the events thus far. He has been through so much already and yet it is fully acknowledged by everyone that he never personally profited a penny from anything that occurred.

He has a family that needs him and friends that care about him so much. I would ask that, as you consider his fate, please keep in mind the terrible hardships and punishment he has already endured and the hardships that will exist for the rest of his life.

Greg Reyes a great and valued Mend. Nothing that happens will ever change that fact. What I know is that Greg is truly a great person of great character and a person that has suffered so much. I would respectfully ask that you take all of this information into consideration as you think about what should happen next for Greg.

I am a former Pro Football player. My career spanned 14 seasons (1981 - 1995) in the NFL. I was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000 and the College Football hall of Fame in 2002. My wife, Karen and I reside in Cupertino with our three children.

In 1999, I co-founded HRJ Capital, a private equity investment manager, where I hold a position as managing member of the firm. In addition to my professional business activities, I am an active member of a number of charitable and community organizations such as The Guardsmen, Opportunities Industrialization Center West (OICW), UCSF Foundation, Tipping Point, Young President's Organization). In 1989, I founded all Stars helping Kids, a non-profit organization which helps disadvantaged youth in the Bay Area. One of our many achievements was the dedication of the All Stars Technology Room and children's garden at UCSF children's Hospital.

Through my community involvement I had the pleasure of meeting Greg Reyes and getting to know him and his family for over 10 years. During these years, I have known Greg to be an outstanding individual with a high degree of integrity and good judgment. He has been a long time supporter of All Stars Helping Kids. His tireless and relentless work with young people has been extraordinary and something to admire. His selfless dedication, support and generosity toward the youth in the community is something he gave from the heart.

Your Honor, I ask that you be compassionate with your sentencing and take into consideration all the good Greg has done for the youth in our community and what he can continue to do. Thank you for your time

I am a founding partner in a venture capital investment firm. I have been involved in the financing of and assistance to young technology companies for the past 25 years. These companies include Adaptec, Compaq, Microsoft, Seagate Technology, and Sun Microsystems. Presently I am serving on the boards of Microsoft and Seagate, and several privately held companies.

I met Greg over 12 years ago, when one the companies, on whose board I served, recruited him for an executive position there. Although he did not accept that position, I have stayed in touch with Greg over the years. I've had the opportunity to know Greg both personally and, by reputation, professionally.

Personally, I know Greg to be dedicated and honorable. We spent a summer together in Nantucket in the mid 1990's. His devotion to his family is very apparent. Gregory and Rebecca, Greg's two children, are 14 and 10, similar in age to my two youngest. Greg is a real hands-on dad, and they are extremely close to him. He and his wife Penny, have had the added challenge of dealing with their son's special needs in recent years, and Greg is instrumental in his daily care.

I am sincerely interested in Greg's circumstances, completely convinced of his morals and his integrity as a businessman, and quite concerned about the well-being of his family should he be taken from them.
